Polychrono
Polychrono is one of
the settlements of the peninsula of Kassandra (Chalkidiki), known for its rare
beauty, which offers its guests and visitors unforgettable holidays and
accommodation.
The settlement borders
the azure waters of the Gulf of Toronaios, “crowning” evergreen olive groves
and beautiful pine forest.
Polychrono offers a
high level of service and genuine Greek hospitality, whilst the crystal waters
of the resort are annually awarded the Blue Flag of Europe, attracting
thousands of visitors from Greece and abroad.
The settlement is
located 100 kilometres from Thessaloniki, which allows it to serve as a
starting point for one-day trips to Mount Athos and Petralona Cave as well as
visits to other interesting places of the peninsula (ancient Olynthos, Toroni,
Potidea, Stagira-Aristotelis and others), to travel to all corners of northern
Greece, including its capital, the city of Thessaloniki.
Infrastructure
Polychrono has a well-developed
infrastructure for a comfortable and pleasant stay: villas, hotel rooms,
apartments, furnished apartments, numerous restaurants, taverns and musical
entertainment with intense nightlife (cafes, bars, discos) – all located in the
town and along the waterfront. In addition, the town has many small
supermarkets, bakeries and shops of folk art. There are also medical offices,
pharmacies and other facilities.
Here you can enjoy
plenty of swimming in crystal clear waters of the sea, sunbathe or play on the
golden sand beach (up to 7 kilometres), or to have an early morning walk along
the beach, enjoying the freshness of the sea or wander among the ever green
pine trees, rich with wellsprings.
You can also visit
Mavrobaru, a small lake located among pine trees which is a wetland with two
rare species, bred turtles (Emydidae and Mauremys caspica), known abroad as
turtles Mavrobary. Due to this fact, the lake Mavrobara received its second
name – Turtle Lake. This is the only lake on the Kassandra peninsula, located 3
kilometres west of Polychrono, at an altitude of 200 meters, around which there
are many hiking trails. Since 1997, the lake is included in the list of natural
monuments.
It is worth noting that
Polychrono (the entire length of the beach) offers all kinds of water sports –
from canoes to bike and jet-ski. And not only that: in this resort town you can
participate in interesting jeep safari organised by major hotels.
In addition, Polychrono
is known for its local products of the highest quality: olives, olive oil,
honey, fruits, fresh fish and other.
What
else to see?
It is worth visiting
the church of St. Athanasius, the patron saint of Polychrono. It was built in
1912. There are also other settlements and the area of the Chapel of Birth of Christ
with the church, dating from 1863.
Apart from that,
Polychrono has an Ethnographic Museum, with an exhibition of items from the
rural and family life of its first inhabitants (loom, screens, press the grape
pomace and so forth), and important archaeological discoveries made during the
ongoing excavations in the territory of the settlement which attest to the
greatness of Greek civilization.
Among the attractions
of this area, there are forested hills of the Acropolis of the ancient city,
the ancient necropolis and the early Christian church with marble columns.
There is also an oil press and renovated old wellspring.
Polychrono often hosts
a variety of cultural events.
To sum up, life in
Polychrono is surprisingly pleasant, comfortable, with all amenities and is
very interesting – especially for real lovers of nature.
