Paliouri
The name of the modern
resort Paliouri is associated with the name of thorn bushes “Paliouria”, which
was used for making the fence.
The total area of the
settlement is approximately 3,000 hectares, of which is nearly a half (1,400
ha) is covered by forests. There are also a lot of olive plantations (110,000
olives trees).
Paliouri
and its neighbouring settlements
Paliouri was founded in
1918 on the basis of the Royal Decree. In June of the same year, a neighbouring
village Hruso was attached to it. The village has a well-known hotel Xenia,
which was built in 1962, and also the eponymous camping, which came into
existence later in 1974.
In Hruso you can enjoy
a clear blue sea and golden sand, which both in combination with pine trees
coming down to the water's edge, create a truly fantastic picture.
To the south-east of
Hruso, there is a village Ksin located at the end of Toronaios Bay (six
kilometres from the cape Kanistro) and after two kilometres there is Agios
Nikolaos with two picturesque coves and a natural harbour, where there is a
small church of St. Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos).
It is noteworthy that
in Kanistro, which is located at the cape of Kassandra peninsula, eight
kilometres away from Paliouri, the temple of Apollo Kanastreu was erected in
ancient times. It was created in the Ionic order, as it is evidenced by the
preserved capital of a column built into the masonry of the church of St.
Nicholas.
Earlier, the area of Kanistro
had metochion of the Ander-Iviron Monastery (between Paliouri, Agia Paraskevi
and Kapsohora/Pefkochori). In the meantime, Ander was the name of the mountain
on which the metochion had been built.
The main profession of
the inhabitants of this region, in fact, as well as the entire peninsula, were beekeeping,
tourism and production of olive oil. In addition, to date Paliouri (and
especially the harbour of Agios Nikolaos) is also one of the best and most
famous fishing spots of Chalkidiki.
Here you can get great
pleasure from hiking in the densely growing pine forest or enjoy the
unsurpassed beauty of nature, or walk through the narrow streets of the town,
characterised by its unique local atmosphere.
Ancient
city of Teramvos
It is assumed that in
the area of modern Paliouri, previously, there was an ancient city of Feramvos
(Teramvos), which was described in the writings of Herodotus. The city was
located between Hruso and hill Arapis, which offers stunning panoramic views.
According to Herodotus, Feramvos was destroyed by Xerxes and perhaps that is
why he was no longer mentioned in the works of later writers. In addition,
recent archaeological excavations on the peninsula and the coast of the Gulf of
Agios Nikolaos revealed findings confirming the existence of the ancient city.
In 1821, during the
revolution of the Greek people, which rose up against Ottoman oppressors,
Paliouri residents took an active part in the liberation of their native land.
One of the most famous fighters of the era, priest Nikolaos Triantafillu, came
from Paliouri.
Marine
area of Paliouri-Akrotiri
The sea zone of
Paliouri-Akrotiri (south-east of the Kassandra peninsula), which occupies 2,872
square metres, is a region protected by the state and is a part of the European
ecological network “Natura 2000” (NATURA 2000).
This place bears
particular importance because of its underwater meadows Posidonia with
flowering sea herbs, which stretch along the coastline at a depth of 1,5-3
metres, since this kind of phanerogams plants (flowering seed plants), which is
endemic to the Mediterranean, is threatened with extinction.
Modern resort Paliouri,
apart from its well-developed tourist infrastructure, has a kindergarten,
elementary school, high school, rural medical clinics and centres for
protection of the elderly (CFIA).
