A small coastal village Gerakini is located near
Kalives Poligiru – between two “fingers” (smaller peninsulas) of Halkidiki,
Kassandra and Sithonia, being an excellent starting point for excursions
throughout the peninsula and, above all, across Kassandra and Sithonia, and
across mountainous parts of Halkidiki with their picturesque traditional
villages in the stunning backdrop of mountains covered with dense vegetation of
the mount of Cholomondas.
Geography
Indeed, the location of Gerakini is unique: if
the north has Mount Cholomondas with all indescribable beauty of its pristine
nature, then the west enjoys a famous tourist resort of Halkidiki – Kassandra
peninsula, with its exquisite resorts and beautiful beaches. Also, the east
side stretches across the Sithonia peninsula, which is famous for its unspoiled
natural beauty, small fishing villages and fantastic beaches – some are the
best in Greece.
Gerakini belongs to the Municipality of Polygyros.
In the early twentieth century, the place was just a small settlement of mine
workers extracting magnesite, which had been widely developed in the 1960s of
the last century.
Nowadays, Gerakini has already developed a tourist
resort, with numerous hotels, apartments and a camping. In addition, the settlement
has a kindergarten.
There is an annual religious festival (panigiri)
conducted in favour of St. Theodore (Theodore Tyron and Theodore Stratelates).
Beach
Gerakini beach stretches along the crystal-clear
sea, where you can cool off during hot summer days. It is an ideal place for
those who like swimming and sun tanning, and those looking for a quiet corner
for complete relaxation.
Local cuisine
Having visited Gerakini, it is important to
taste the local cuisine in order to feel the true taste of Greece: the resort
is famous for preparation of fresh fish and shells that are usually accompanied
by the Greek salad, which is called by the Greeks as “rural salad” (Horyatiki
salad) and a glass of anisette vodka (ouzo).
Night life
Nightlife in Gerakini is surprisingly noiseless
and pleasant. In the evening, you can wander through the streets of the resort,
or glance through the shops or walk along the waterfront, as well as to sit in
one of the many taverns and coffee shops while enjoying a glass of your
favourite wine and admiring the unique colours immersed in a sea of the setting
sun.
Shopping
Gerakini has plenty of shops with locally made products,
where you can buy a souvenir for yourself and your friends – in memory of the Greek
holidays. You can also buy hand-made goods and jewellery.
Goods of
local produce: olives and olive oil.
