Introduction to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
At present time, the advantage of choosing a higher
education institution lies with five cities: Athens, Thessaloniki, Rethymno,
Heraklion, Patras.
Among the best universities of the country is featured the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which was founded in 1925.
Originally,
the name was slightly different, but in 1954 it was renamed and since then the
university proudly bears the name of the ancient Greek philosopher.
At the
moment, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest university not
only in Greece but also in the entire Balkan region.
Today, it has 12
faculties, which, along with the faculty of law, economics and political
science, offer training in engineering, theology, philosophy, pedagogy and
medicine. There is a faculty of agriculture, forestry and environment as well
as the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
There are also several independent
departments, such as pharmaceuticals, a School of Journalism and Media and
School of Physical Education and sport disciplines.
Currently, the university
has 95,000 undergraduate students and 9,000 students receive postgraduate
education.
As the university bears the name of Aristotle, there is a proverb
that if a student before an exam rubbed his thumb on the left bronze foot of
Aristotle statue, located on the waterfront in Thessaloniki, it would
definitely guarantee a high exam score.
